Known for his authorship of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, George Mason’s work and beliefs were a major influence into the writing of the United States Bill of Rights. He earned the nickname, the reluctant statesman, after refusing to sign the United States Constitution because it did not abolish slavery. The George Mason Memorial pays homage to his contributions to our country and features a bronze statue of Mason sitting on a bench surrounded by trees, flowers and a pretty fountain.
