After several years of extensive renovation, The Villa Zorayda Museum is now open to the public, showcasing the striking style of Moorish Spanish Revival Architecture that it was fashioned after. Originally called the Zorayda Castle, the building was constructed in 1883 by Franklin Smith, an architect from Boston. Smith built the residence as a winter home and designed it to be a scaled-down replica of the Alhambra Palace in Spain. His style of architecture included using coquina shells mixed with poured concrete and it is said that his method had a powerful impact on later buildings that were constructed in St. Augustine. Today, guests to the museum see marvelous items from the antique collections of Franklin Smith and Abraham Mussallem, Zorayda Castle’s second owner. You’ll also learn about the significance of the building to the city and its intriguing past.
